How to cook Fish pepper soup ?

Fish Pepper Soup is a light, spicy, and flavorful West African soup made with fresh fish and aromatic spices. It is easy to prepare and can be enjoyed on its own or with rice, bread, yam, or plantain.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg fresh fish
  • 1 onion
  • 2–3 fresh peppers
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • A small piece of ginger
  • 2 fresh tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon pepper soup spice mix
  • 1 teaspoon paprika or ground chili pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 liter of water
  • A few fresh parsley or coriander leaves

Preparation

  1. Clean the fish thoroughly and cut it into medium-sized pieces. If using whole fish, remove the scales and clean the inside properly.
  2. Peel the onion, garlic, and ginger. Wash the tomatoes and fresh peppers.
  3. Blend or crush the onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, and peppers.
  4. Place the blended mixture in a pot and add about 1 liter of water.
  5. Add the black pepper, pepper soup spice mix, paprika, and salt.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and let it cook for about 10 minutes.
  7. Carefully add the fish pieces to the soup.
  8. Cover the pot and cook gently for 10–15 minutes. Avoid stirring too much so that the fish does not break apart.
  9. Taste the soup and adjust the salt and pepper according to your preference.
  10. Add fresh parsley or coriander leaves and allow the soup to simmer for another 2 minutes.
  11. Turn off the heat and let the soup rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Serving and Enjoyment

Serve the Fish Pepper Soup hot in bowls.

It can be enjoyed on its own or accompanied by:

  • Fresh bread
  • White rice
  • Boiled yam
  • Fried or boiled plantain
  • Potatoes
  • Gari

For a beautiful presentation, place a piece of fish in each bowl and garnish with fresh parsley or coriander and a little fresh pepper.

Tip: Fish cooks quickly, so avoid overcooking it. Cook gently and handle the fish carefully to keep the pieces whole and tender.
